Some of Our Volunteer Placements:
Mary’s Child Residential Home for Child Survivors of Gender-based abuse
Mary’s Child is a residential home for girls aged 12-18, who are survivors of abuse and gender-based violence. Many of these girls have become pregnant as a result of the abuse they experienced, and moved to Mary’s child to receive support. The residential home provides educational, parenting, and medical support, within a safe, welcoming and stable home. The Mary’s Child team goes above and beyond by training the girls in their training centre, which includes a computer lab, cooking centre and sewing centre. Girls and their babies are usually in the home for 3 years before moving on.
We will be empowering these girls and babies by…
Hosting a self-care sessions with skincare, haircare and make-up, to help mothers feel empowered, cared for, and beautiful. We hope our self-care session will encourage the girls to take time for themselves, and engage in something that feels good.
Playing and spending time with the babies.
Gifting the home with vital hygiene products, baby supplies and educational materials.
Tulloch Primary School, St. Catherine
Tulloch Primary School located in St. Catherine tells a story of teachers and students persevering despite the odds. After multiple infestations of rats, bats, termites and more, the primary school has had to close. It has since re-open after an initial fumigation, but the pest issues still remain. In addition to the pest issues, the school is underfunded with teachers having to creatively make educational materials out of their pocket, to ensure the children can learn.
So our task is to solve the pest control issue once and for all, whilst showing the students and staff of Tulloch Primary that we care.
We will support Tulloch Primary by…
Organising and (sourcing) funding for vital pest control and site management efforts (before our arrival)
Decorating and re-painting the school
Providing the school with educational materials and school supplies
Gifting Christmas presents to students and staff
Savanna la Mar Inclusive Infant school
Savanna la Mar Inclusive Infant school is the first of its kind in Jamaica. As a school where children of all abilities can come together and learn, Sav La Mar Infant school shows the rest of Jamaica how inclusive education ought to be done. In Jamaica, Special Educational Needs is an often overlooked. With many children with different-abilities not receiving the specialised education and support they need to thrive, or even being excluded and discriminated against. By creating a school, where all abilities come together, able-bodies and neurotypical children can make friends with differently abled children and learn about difference. Whilst children with different needs, can be included and get the quality education they deserve.
We will be supporting the children and teachers at Savanna La Mar Infant school, by…
spending time with students playing games with them, talking to them, reading to them, and more.
gifting the school with inclusive educational supplies and toys for students.
SmiloZone Cares, Montego Bay
SmiloZone Cares raises awareness of the often untold negative environmental affects Jamaica’s tourist industry has of Jamaica’s environment and ecosystems. Tourism across Jamaica creates tonnes of plastic and glass waste, and there are limited recycling opportunities on the island.
This is where SmiloZone Cares starts its mission to recycle and repurpose tonnes of hotel waste to protect and sustain Jamaica’s natural beauty and wildlife…
So our task is to raise awareness of this issue and support recycling efforts.
We will support SmiloZone Cares by…
Recycling hotel glass bottles
Upcycling hotels glass bottles into sellable products

FAQs
How much will the trip cost?
We are currently in the process of finalising prices subject to external funding. Despite our best efforts to make the trip as affordable as possible, our team is aware that travelling to Jamaica is often financially inaccessible for many young people. That is why Reconnect JA is continuing to work hard to find and secure external funding to reduce the overall costs of the trip and make it accessible for all. Unfortunately we will not know if we have been successful in securing funding until later in the year. But we assure you, that for those who have already paid (in full or through the payment plan), you will be giving a partial refund of the difference. Whilst for those, who are yet to secure their space, this reduction will act as the perfect opportunity to do so. The final prices, as outlined in the timeline, will be announced in October, though we will discuss pricing and payment in our meeting.
Are there any funding opportunities?
Beyond external funding, we are dedicated to supporting current students and recent alumni secure funding through their universities. We hope by support you communicate with your university, we will be able to partially finance the trip through your university.
Is there any flexibility with date, departures locations etc?
Do I get to choose my volunteer placement?
I have a health condition/ neurodiversity/ disability/ allergy. How can Reconnect JA support?
Reconnect JA is committed to making the Back ah Yaad Giveback as inclusive and accessible as possible. If you require reasonable adjustments or additional support, please let us know when you fill out the registration form so we can best support you.
