Respecting Patwa: Its Past, Present & Future

On Saturday, 26th October, Reconnect JA hosted a vibrant event at the Prince of Peckham’s Music Room, blending a guest lecture, open mic session, and live performances to celebrate the rich history and cultural significance of Patwa. The evening sought to challenge the misconception that Patwa is merely "broken English," instead highlighting its depth, history, and evolving role in shaping Caribbean identity and self-expression.

Our guest speaker was Dr. Farquharson, Senior Lecturer within the Jamaican Language Unit at the University of West Indies and Founder & CEO of Caribbean Linguistics Consulting Service, who shared insights into Patwa’s linguistic roots and cultural importance. We then had performances from Tia-Renee Mullings, an award-winning playwright and founder of Cambridge University’s Black Artists Society, and Denneil Dunbar, professional actor, playwright, poet, and songwriter.
