Reconnect JA is passionate about building a well-connected and well-informed British-Jamaican community. So we wanted to make sure you have an easy space to learn about events for the Caribbean community that are going on across the country…

Black History Month 2025

Reconnect JA is back with Black History Month events this October, honouring the power of resistance, culture, and connection through music, hair, and food. From themes of resistance, pride and power in reggae to afro hair heritage to the flavours of Brixton, our events celebrate the stories that shape us and the legacies we carry forward.

Reggae is Resistance Listening Party

Saturday 11th October, 6pm - 8pm

Brig Cafe

54-57 Allison Street Birmingham B5 5TH

Reggae is not just music, it’s a movement.

Join us for an evening of rhythm, resistance, and reflection as we explore the revolutionary power of reggae.

Expect powerful lyrics, uplifting vibes, networking, refreshments, and even a few games to break the ice. In the second half, we’ll dive deeper, unpacking the lyrics, their historical and political context, and how reggae has shaped and spoken to struggles for freedom. Together, we’ll reflect on what this music means for us today, and connect it to Birmingham’s own history of resistance and resilience.

Come ready to listen, learn, and reason.

Canerows & Culture: Hair History, Hair Care, and Canerowing Workshop

Friday 17th October, 6pm - 8pm

Moss Side Millenium Powerhouse

140 Raby Street Moss Side M14 4SL

Manchester

Saturday 25th October, 12pm - 2pm

JN Bank UK

410 Brixton Road London SW9 7AW

Join us in celebrating the power, resistance, and history of afro hair and afro hair stylings, with the opportunity to learn how to canerow.

In this two-part event, we celebrate the beauty and power of natural Black hairstyles while exploring the stories they carry.

The first part of the workshop will feature an engaging conversation on the history of afro hair, how styles have been used to resist oppression, and the ways our hair continues to symbolize strength, creativity, and freedom. After a short break, we will be moving onto practical applications of hair care and growth, along with a beginner-friendly introduction to canerowing. Bring your curiosity — and get ready to practice!

Nyamming up History: Jamaican food history tour

Sharing the history behind your favourite Jamaican dishes through a walking tour of Brixton with stops for food along the way.

On this tour, we will be uncovering the stories behind Jamaican cuisine and its place in the area’s vibrant multicultural heritage. Together we’ll trace how food travelled with the Windrush generation, how it became a cornerstone of community life, and how dishes we love today carry layers of history.

Come ready to eat, connect, and celebrate the powerful link between food and identity.

This Black History Month, Reconnect JA proudly hosted three dynamic events designed to spark conversation, challenge misconceptions, and celebrate the richness of Black heritage:

  1. Private Viewing of Barrel Children: The Families Windrush Left Behind – A screening and panel discussion exploring the emotional impact of migration on Caribbean families left behind during the Windrush era.

  2. Living Black British History: Panel Discussion with Black-British Activists – A hybrid event spotlighting contemporary changemakers shaping Black British history today.

  3. Respecting Patwa: Its Past, Present and Future – An evening of discussion, performances, and open mic celebrating Patwa as an evolving expression of Jamaican culture and identity.

These events reflect Reconnect JA’s mission to connect British-Jamaican youth with their heritage through education, information-sharing, and cultural exploration. By creating spaces for open dialogue and fostering connections, we aim to inspire pride in Caribbean identity while building understanding across communities. Black History Month is not just about reflecting on the past; it’s about acknowledging the present and envisioning a future where our stories are valued and celebrated.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our supporters who made these events possible: Southwark Council, Dees Imports, and Howe’s Exports. Your generosity and commitment to community empowerment have helped us bring these vital conversations to life.

Reconnect JA is committed to amplifying the voices of the Caribbean diaspora and fostering spaces for learning, reflection, and connection. Thank you for joining us on this journey of celebration and discovery!
